What is a "karat"?

Karat refers to the purity of the gold, with pure gold being 24 karat and reddish-yellow in colour. This purity of gold is too soft for jewellery and bends easily.

When gold is mixed with other metals to strengthen it and change its colour, the mixture is expressed in karat as well. Our jewellery is available in 14 karat Rose Gold (14 parts pure gold + 10 parts copper), 9 karat White Gold (9 parts pure gold + 15 parts other metals) and 9 karat Yellow Gold (9 parts pure gold + 15 parts other metals).

Solid Gold, Plated Gold or Vermeil?

All Avyanna gold jewellery is made from solid gold, which ensures that the entire piece is created with the same quality gold throughout and will look beautiful, even with age.

Plated gold jewellery is made from any another metal (often nickel) and electroplated with gold. The gold layer should be at least 0.5 microns (0.0005mm / 0.000019685 inches) thick. Over time, the plating degrades and the original metal shows through the gold, especially in scratched areas.

Vermeil is a solid sterling silver piece of jewellery wrapped in at least 2.5 microns (0.0025mm / 0.000098425 inches) of gold. While more durable than plated gold jewellery, vermeil gold jewellery is not as durable as solid gold jewellery.

What is a "carat"?

Carat can refer to the purity of gold (instead of "karat") or the weight of a gemstone. At Avyanna, we use carat to refer to the weight of our diamonds, and karat to refer to the purity of our gold.

One carat is equal to 0.2 grams (approximately 0.007 ounces).

White Diamonds

Our white diamonds are specifically chosen from the highest grade colourless diamonds. All diamonds used in our jewellery is graded "D" under the GIA grading system ("Exceptional White +" under the IDC grading system) for colour, which means that they appear colourless to the naked eye and under 10x magnification.

We only use VVS2 clarity diamonds, which have slight inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye and under 10x magnification.

Black Diamonds

Unlike white diamonds, black diamonds cannot be graded for colour or clarity. All black diamonds are graded "Fancy Black" in colour. Black diamonds are denser than white diamonds, therefore a black diamond of the same weight as a white diamond will be smaller.

Black diamonds are less expensive than white diamonds, although they are more rare and difficult to cut, mostly because demand for them as jewellery items only started in the early 2000’s.
